La Jolla Real Estate - Homes for Sale in La Jolla, CA
La Jolla is the stretch of coastline in northern San Diego where the bluffs rise straight out of the Pacific, seven miles of shoreline that fall almost entirely inside zip code 92037. La Jolla Cove anchors the village at its center, with seven sea caves cut into the sandstone cliffs nearby, and Prospect Street runs above the water lined with the galleries, restaurants, and shops that give the village its polish. Birch Aquarium sits above La Jolla Shores as part of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and UC San Diego's main campus is just inland, giving this stretch of coast a research and academic presence most beach towns don't have. Further south, Windansea and Bird Rock carry the coastline toward Pacific Beach, each with its own beach and its own quieter version of La Jolla's character.

La Jolla
The name La Jolla comes from the Kumeyaay word mat kulaaxuuy, meaning roughly land of holes, likely a reference to the sea caves along the cliffs. Of the seven caves, Sunny Jim is the only one in California you can reach by land, down a tunnel and 144 steps that have been open to the public since 1903, and you get to it through the Cave Store on Prospect Street. La Jolla Cove itself, just below the village, is where you'll find the sea lions and harbor seals that have made it one of the most photographed spots on the San Diego coast. Homes here range from oceanfront estates along the bluffs to more modest condos and mid-century houses tucked into the hillsides of Bird Rock and La Jolla Shores, and the neighborhood is shaped as much by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UC San Diego as by the water itself.

About La Jolla
La Jolla's name has a more complicated history than the postcards suggest. The common story is that it comes from the Spanish "La Joya," meaning "the jewel," but many historians trace it instead to a Kumeyaay word referring to the sea caves along the coastline. Either way, the neighborhood as we know it dates to 1887, when the first lots were auctioned off after New York stockbroker Frank Botsford bought more than 400 acres of pueblo land the year before. The "Red Roost" and "Red Rest" cottages built in 1894 across from the Cove are still standing and are considered the oldest structures in the area. La Jolla covers zip code 92037 and holds about 16 distinct sub-neighborhoods, from La Jolla Shores to Bird Rock to Windansea, each with its own feel. The Village, centered on Prospect Street and Girard Avenue, stays busy year-round, while a few blocks inland the streets go quiet and residential fast.
George's at the Cove has anchored Prospect Street since 1984, and the rooftop Ocean Terrace has some of the best views of any restaurant table in San Diego. On Wall Street, Puesto La Jolla serves modern Mexican food built around organic blue corn tortillas made in-house daily. Sea lions haul out at La Jolla Cove and harbor seals gather at the Children's Pool a short walk south along Coast Boulevard, and visitors are required to stay 50 yards back from both by law. Sunny Jim Sea Cave, accessible through The Cave Store, is the only sea cave in California you can walk into from land. La Jolla Shores, a short drive from the Village, has the calmest surf in town and is where most families with kids end up for beach days, kayaking and paddleboarding.
