Clairemont Real Estate - Homes for Sale in Clairemont, San Diego
Clairemont sits on the mesa between Interstate 5 and Interstate 805, close enough to Mission Bay that plenty of streets catch a view of the water, and it falls mostly within the 92117 zip code, with a portion reaching into 92111 to the east. The neighborhood was laid out in 1950 by developers Carlos Tavares and Lou Burgener, who named it for Tavares's wife, Claire, and built what became San Diego's largest post-war subdivision, and the first residents moved in during the spring of 1951. Tecolote Canyon, a nearly 900-acre stretch of protected open space running about six miles through the community, still shapes which lots back up to trail and brush instead of another backyard. Homes here are largely the ranch-style construction of the 1950s and early 1960s on lots that commonly run 6,000 to 8,000 square feet.

Clairemont
Clairemont is where a lot of San Diego actually lives, and that is meant as a compliment. Developers Carlos Tavares and Lou Burgener bought the mesa northeast of Mission Bay in 1950 and built what became the city's largest post-war subdivision, and the neighborhood filled in fast through the rest of the 1950s and into the early 1960s, so its housing stock still reads as one coherent era of California ranch homes, most sitting on lots generous enough to add on to or simply keep a real yard. What stands out when I show buyers around is how much the geography does the work. Tecolote Canyon runs straight through the middle of the community, nearly six miles of protected open space with trails residents actually use, and the mesa's elevation means a surprising number of streets get a look at Mission Bay or the ocean beyond it without a coastline price tag attached.

About Clairemont
Clairemont is San Diego's largest post-war subdivision, and it was built fast. Developers Carlos Tavares and Lou Burgener broke ground in 1950 on land pieced together from the old Peavey Cattle Ranch, Mission Bay Heights and Tecolote Heights holdings, and named the community after Tavares's wife, Claire. Families started moving in during May of 1951, and by 1952 to 1954 crews were finishing seven houses a day. The neighborhood spans roughly 13 square miles across zip codes 92117 and 92111, bordered by Interstate 5 to the west, Interstate 805 to the east, and State Route 52 to the north, and it is really a cluster of smaller pockets, North Clairemont, Clairemont Mesa East and West, Bay Park and Bay Ho, more than one single place. The housing is unpretentious, mostly ranch-style tract homes, but the winding streets and canyon lots gave the neighborhood more privacy and view than the price point would suggest.
Clairemont Mesa Boulevard is where the neighborhood eats. STP does burgers, barbecue and a solid craft beer list, Havana Grill is the Cuban option people drive across town for, and Ma's House has been serving certified halal Chinese food for close to fifty years. Clairemont Town Square anchors the retail side with T.J. Maxx, Michaels, Petco and Reading Cinemas. Clairemont's other draw is water and canyon access without a coastal price tag. De Anza Cove, on the northeast corner of Mission Bay Park, has a boat launch, volleyball courts and a paved path that circles the bay, open daily from 4am to 2am. And Clairemont has a piece of only-in-San-Diego trivia worth knowing: the very first Price Club, which later became Costco, opened here in 1976.
