Ocean Beach Homes for Sale
Ocean Beach sits at the mouth of the San Diego River on the northern edge of the Point Loma peninsula, all of it inside zip code 92107. Newport Avenue runs straight down to the water and ends at the Ocean Beach Pier, a 1,971-foot concrete pier that opened in 1966 and is still the longest of its kind on the West Coast, and Sunset Cliffs traces a mile and a half of bluffs along the neighborhood's southern edge. Dog Beach sits at the northern tip, one of the country's original off-leash beaches, and the blocks around Newport Avenue are still full of the Craftsman bungalows and beach cottages that date back to when the town was first laid out in 1887. It has kept its independent, unpolished character even as the rest of the coastline around it has filled in.

Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach was laid out in 1887, when the streets were surveyed and the first lots were sold at a mussel roast on the beach, and Newport Avenue has been the commercial spine of the neighborhood ever since. Today that stretch of Newport is where you find the antique stores, surf shops, and independent coffee houses that have made OB one of the few beach towns in San Diego that never smoothed itself out for tourists, and the Wednesday farmers market still runs along several blocks of the avenue. The pier at the end of the street has drawn anglers and walkers since 1966, and Sunset Cliffs, just south along the coast, is where I send people who want to watch the sun go down without a crowd blocking the view. Housing here ranges from Craftsman bungalows and cottages built between 1887 and 1931 to newer builds and multi-unit properties tucked onto the smaller lots closer to the water, and it draws a mix of longtime OB families, surfers, and buyers who want walkable beach living without the price tag of La Jolla or the polish of Pacific Beach.

About Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach has always done things its own way. The pier at the end of Newport Avenue is the longest concrete pier on the West Coast at 1,971 feet, and Dog Beach, where the sand meets the mouth of the San Diego River, was one of the first official leash-free beaches in the country when it opened in 1972. The neighborhood sits in zip code 92107 on the northwest corner of the Point Loma peninsula. It is a small footprint, and that has kept its character intact for decades. Ocean Beach carries two identities at once. It is a beach town that pulls in visitors for the pier, Dog Beach and the Wednesday farmers market, and it is also a neighborhood of small residential streets running up toward Sunset Cliffs where things get quiet fast. You can walk to the water and back to a porch nobody bothers within ten minutes, and that trade-off is a big part of why people stay once they move in.
Newport Avenue is the spine of the neighborhood and it has held onto its independent businesses better than most San Diego commercial strips. Hodad's has been serving burgers since 1969 and is still the place people wait in line for. South Beach Bar & Grill has been open since 1992 and built its name on the Mahi fish taco, and Sunshine Company Saloon has been a fixture since 1974. The Newport Avenue Antique District holds more than 200 individual dealers, the largest concentration anywhere in San Diego County. Ocean Beach People's Organic Food Market on Voltaire Street is the only member-owned grocery co-op in San Diego. The Ocean Beach Farmers Market runs every Wednesday from 4 to 8pm along Newport, and Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, a 68-acre park along the peninsula's western shoreline, draws people for tidepooling and the sunset views the street is named for.
